The recital is a long-honored and eagerly anticipated tradition held each May! We aim to create a polished performance, instill the value of show & rehearsal etiquette, and create life-long memories. Dancers gain self-confidence, practice awareness, and learn to express emotions while working as a group to achieve creative goals. This requires regular attendance in class, dedicated practice, and participation at rehearsals.

✅ Rules
Rehearsals are closed. One guardian is allowed at dress rehearsal. Staff only onstage & backstage. No running. No food, drinks, gum in audience or in costume. No jewelry, nail polish, photo/video. Cover-up costumes in audience. No valuables. Label items with name. Ziplocs are helpful for accessories, safety pins, & first aid.
💄 Makeup
We recommend makeup for dress rehearsal & shows. If your dancer is younger or not familiar with makeup, cheek and lip color is most important so they won’t appear washed out under stage lights! We recommend foundation, neutral eye shadow, mascara, blush, & red lipstick.
💇♀️ Hair & Hairpieces
No bangs. Act 1: Low bun. Act 2: Low pony. Do before dress rehearsal & shows. For short hair, pin away from face. If your costume came with a hairpiece, use bobby pins to secure on the right side of your bun/ponytail. Bun video tutorial below featuring Body Works Stylist, Emily Harris & model, Stella.
👚 Costumes
Costumes are included in tuition. Non-refundable. We measure in Nov, order in Dec, and send costumes home in the spring once they arrive. Exception: Creative Movement is not in recital.
Please HANG costume(s) in a safe place. Label all parts with name. We recommend a hand steamer to remove wrinkles. A garment bag may be used for multiple costumes & a ziploc bag is helpful for accessories. Please do not let your children wear prior to the performance. There are NO replacements.
Costume sizing is general — small, medium, etc. Perfect fit is not guaranteed. We are not responsible for alterations, but you may make changes as needed: pin straps, cut pant length, etc. For complicated alterations, text seamstress Emily Harris to schedule fitting at 434-546-0261.
🥾 Shoes, Tights
Wear correct color of tights & shoes listed for each dance in show order below. No underwear under costumes. Nude undergarments if needed. Layer tights for quick changes.
Act 1: Ballet pink convertible tights. These have a small hole built into the bottom of the foot.
Act 2: Skin tone stirrup tights. Caramel & Light Suntan are frequent choices, but see all colors here.
Local provider: Carolina Connection. Purchase early to avoid delays!
Rehearsals at the Studio: 5/3 – 5/12
At the studio. No regular classes. No costumes. If only in one dance, you will NOT need a bag – just shoes for your dance. Dancers rehearse in time slots based on show order on different days & times than the regular year. This allows us to space dances in our largest studio (Room 1&2) which translates to the stage size & finalize creative elements. Office CLOSED while teachers are in rehearsals.
- Combo A students wear shirts for rehearsal to match the color of your costume to help us group you.
- Leggings or shorts and a fitted shirt instead of tights/leo are acceptable.
